Bottle description on the back (click/tap arrow on left side of this line)

A crisp, fruity and refreshing Riesling from the mineral-rich slate soil of the Mosel valley. It is an ideal companion to mildly spicy stir fry dishes and Indian curries or simply serve it as an aperitif.

Description

This bottle is a 2023. It’s a German Riesling, so I expect that this wine will be light, citrusy, acidic, and slightly sweet. This wine was about $10 from the store near me, containing 8.5% alcohol. The appearance of the wine is slightly golden, light, and a bit of a dull yellow.

Smell

This wine stinks. It smells like gasoline. There’s not many different distinct smells coming from this wine for the most part. Definitely a bit of a pear/apple smell. With those fruits also comes the aroma of citrus.

Taste

This wine hits me with a strong intensity. The citrus is powerful, and the flavor of apple and pear is there with the smell of them. It’s sweet, and a little sparkly. The flavor is very light and delicate.

Analysis

I can understand why this would pair well with slightly spicy foods. The spiciness would distract from the acidity that’s combined with the citrus. It’s strong, intense, and slightly tangy. It leans more towards acidic and is an off-dry wine.

Conclusion

I would love to buy this wine again. It’s not my favorite, but I would love to try this with grilled chicken. It’s intense enough that the flavor of the chicken wouldn’t take away too much from it, balancing it out instead. The stinky smell threw me off at first, so I wasn’t expecting it to taste as good as it did. I would rate this an 8.4/10. It’s not my favorite, but definitely a yummy wine!

  1. Great review! I appreciate the honest take on the “gasoline” smell – that’s a good thing to know going in. I totally agree that Riesling is fantastic with spicy food, and the idea of pairing this with grilled chicken is intriguing. For $10, it sounds like a solid find, even with the initial funky aroma. I’ll have to keep an eye out for this one, especially if I’m planning a meal with a bit of kick! Thanks for sharing your tasting notes!
